Prayer for the Victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Reconstruction of the Disaster-Stricken Area

Urayasu no maiAlthough a year has already passed since a great earthquake hit the eastern Japan, it still takes a lot of time and efforts to reconstruct the disaster-stricken area.

On 21st July, Todai-ji and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu served a joint ritual to pray for the victims and an immediate reconstruction.

Because of historical connections among the disaster-stricken Tohoku region, Todai-ji and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, we strongly feel the need to pray for and support people in the region.

In the ritual, monks from the temple read parts of Daihannyakyo (Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra), and Shinto maidens from the shrine dedicated a sacred dance called Urayasu no mai. Solemnly, prayers were dedicated in both Buddhism and Shinto way.
