Special Lecture Day at Tokyo National Museum

tohaku1.jpgOn 9th May, we participated in a special lecture day held by Jinja Honcho, the Association of Shinto Shrines, in commemoration of “the Grand Exhibition of Treasures from Shinto Shrines” at Tokyo National Museum.

This lecture day was organized for diplomats, embassy staff, foreign correspondents, and foreign students, and about 130 of them attended to the event. Among the audience were Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium, H.E. Mr. Luc Liebaut, and Ambassador of Jamaica, H.E. Miss Claudia Cecile Barnes.

tohaku.jpgOur Chief Priest, Shigeho Yoshida, and the Director of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Research Institute, Kenji Kato, gave lectures on an introduction to Shinto and Shinto art respectively. In addition, Shinto priests and maidens performed “Miyabito-no-mai”, a sacred dance usually dedicated only at the major ritual on 16th December.

The audience deepened their understanding of Shinto and was fascinated by the performance. After the lectures, they enjoyed the exhibition as well.

* “The Grand Exhibition of Treasures from Shinto Shrines” is taking place at Tokyo National Museum until 2nd June, Sunday.
