Kigen-sai (National Foundation Day) Was Celebrated

11th February, which falls on 1st January under the lunar calendar, is National Foundation Day. It is the day when the first emperor ascended the throne.

On this day, shrines all over Japan conduct a ritual to celebrate the foundation of the country.

In the ritual Kigen-sai at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Chief Priest prayed for prosperity of the nation, and shrine maidens dedicated a dance called “Urayasu-no-mai” as a prayer for a peaceful world.
