Information on Hotaru-matsuri (Firefly Festival)

From 8th to 15th June, you can enjoy the fantastic sight that numbers of fireflies are flying around beautifully with blinking lights.

The light of firefly was loved by the Japanese from long time ago. We hope you may feel the preciousness of life and the seasons’ passing, and to thank our kami for giving us life and daily sustenance when you see this fantastic sight.

The pond and stream area will be open to the public for free during the period below.

Date: 8th (Sun)-15th (Sun) of June
Place: Yanagihara sacred pond (in front of Wakamiya Shrine)
Time: from sunset to 8:30 pm

* Please DO NOT use any lighting device when you walk around the pond. Fireflies are very sensitive, so they won’t lighten.
* Depending on the weather, the number of visible fireflies’ light will be varied.
