Mikagura Was Performed in Portland, Oregon, the U.S.

portland1.JPGOn 19th July, Shinto priests and shrine maidens from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu dedicated Mikagura, Japanese traditional music and dance, in Portland, Oregon, the United States.

Portland Japanese Garden invited the priests and maidens to perform Mikagura to celebrate the Garden’s 50th anniversary. It was conducted at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. A lecture on Shinto was also given by Chief Priest before the performance. About 600 people came to see this sacred dance and experienced the feeling of Japanese tradition.

On the day before the performance, a planting ceremony was conducted as well, and a sapling from the Great Ginkgo of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was planted in Portland Japanese Garden. Chief Priest and Mr Stephen Bloom, CEO of the Garden, covered its root with earth, and strengthened the bond between the garden and the shrine.
