The Portland Japanese Garden has launched a new project to build “a Cultural Village”, a complex to offer more experiences of Japanese culture. On the occasion of its groundbreaking ceremony, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was invited to conduct a Shinto-style ritual for purifying the construction site and praying for the safety of the workers. Since Tsurugaoka Hachimangu had performed dance and music to celebrate the garden’s 50th anniversary in 2014, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was appointed to play this significant role.

At the ceremony, CEO of the Portland Japanese Garden, Mr. Stephen Bloom, made Tamagushi offerings after a priest’s prayer and a shrine maiden’s dance. It became a great opportunity for the impressed 250 attendees to experience Japanese tradition.
