Cultural Exchange of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and "Hula" in Hawaii



On 7th October, a joint performance of Mikagura and Hula Kahiko was held at Hawaii Convention Center as an opportunity to share the traditional culture of Japan and Hawaii. Firstly, an award-winning company of Hula Keiki, Hālau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai, and Hālau O Kekuhi put on energetic hula performances respectively. After Chief Priest of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Rev. Yoshida gave an introductory lecture on Shinto and Mikagura, Japanese Imperial Court Music and Dance, priests and maidens performed mikagura with solemn stillness.

In the following week, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu delegates visited Kauai and Hawaii islands to hold Shinto cultural workshops. Attendants wrote down their wishes on votive tablets and experienced Shinto purification ritual. Then, they practiced Gagaku instrument and sacred dance with Shito priests and shrine maiden.
