Information on Firefly Festival

In Japan, fireflies are a symbol of Japanese summer and clear environment, because Japanese fireflies can only breed and live in the clean water.
In Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the fireflies are released to express our thanks to the deity for the abundance of the four seasons and for the preciousness of life.
The pond and stream area will be open to the public for free during the following period.
Please enjoy this visionary scene of the Japanese traditional summer in the sacred atmosphere of the shrine precinct.

 Date: Sun. 11 June – Sun. 18 June 2017
Time: From sunset to 8:30 pm
Place: Yanagihara-shinchi pond (in front of Wakamiya Shrine)

* Please DO NOT use any lighting device including smartphones when you walk around the pond.
Fireflies stop illuminating when they feel the light except their own lights.
* Photo taking is prohibited on the pathway around the pond.
*Whether fireflies can be seen, it depends on the weather.
