The 10th Tsurugaoka Intellectual Salon was held on 19th November

The 10th Tsurugaoka Intellectual Salon (TIS) titled “Japanese Art of Caligraphy” was held on 19th November.

In the first part, Rev. Mr. Shigeho Yoshida, the chief Priest of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, lectured on the history of Japanese letter and illustrated features of Japanese calligraphy with examples of calligraphy written by famous people in Japanese history.
After the lecture, a workshop of calligraphy was conducted by Mrs. Koyama Nagisa, a renowned calligrapher. Mrs. Koyama demonstrated writing Kanji and Kana letters with brush and sumi ink and showed how to control the brush.

Although the most of attendees did not have experiences of calligraphy, attended embassy officials including the Ambassador of Portugal, H.E. Mr. Francisco XAVIER ESTEVES and foreign students enjoyed challenging to write a word or a short phrase they chose.
