Intern from Switzerland

Miss. Annabelle Becher from Switzerland was invited by Tsurugaoka Hachimangu as a cultural intern for 10 days from March 20th to 29th. This was a special request from the former Swiss Ambassador to Japan, Mr. Bucher (currently, Swiss Ambassador to the Europe Union). When his daughter, Annabelle was 10 years old, she served Firefly Festival as a shrine maiden in 2011. Since then, Swiss Embassy and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu have been promoted intercultural exchange actively, and this internship also symbolizes our sincere friendship. During the internship, she experienced a wide range of Japanese culture including a manner of a shrine maiden, shrine maiden’s dance, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy, and a visit to Ise Jingu shrine as an excursion. Through these experience, her interest toward Japanese culture grew more, and we expect her to be a bridge for intercultural activities between Japan and Switzerland in the future.
