"Mikagura and Mikomai of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu" at National Theatre on 1st June

“Mikagura and Mikomai of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu” was performed as a special program at National Theatre (Small Theatre) on 1st June.

At first, Rev. Yoshida, chief priest of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, gave a short speech about history and significance of Mikagura. Then, sacred dances were performed by the priests and the maidens gracefully and solemnly. The performance consists of three sacred dances, “Yorozuyo-no-mai”, “Nagoshi-no-mai”, and “Nincho-no-mai”. It is very rare to be performed these dances outside of the shrine at one time, because there are the sacred dances to be dedicated at the special ritual in the shrine.
