Tsurugaoka Intellectual Salon (TIS) was held on 23rd June

The 15th Tsurugaoka Intellectual Salon (TIS) was held on 23rd June.

In the first part, Rev. Yoshida, Chief Priest of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu gave a welcome speech. Next, the lecturer, Ms. Somi Nakajima, Tea master of Ura Senke School, talked about the history and the spirit of tea ceremony.

After the lecture, tea prepared by the tea master, and Japanese sweet were served for participants. In the latter part, the workshop is held at a traditional room which is covered with Tatami, Japanese straw-mat. The tea master, her assistant and shrine maidens gave a demonstration of tea ceremony, and then participants made a tea for themselves by using a whisk.

The Ambassador’s wife of Belgium, embassy officials including Canada, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, and international students attended the workshop. Some participants experienced tea ceremony for the first time and they all deepened understanding of Japanese tea culture through this salon.
